I was there. The third band on the bill that day in Grant Park was
Material Issue. What a great day of rock'n'roll, as all three bands were
on fire. The 'Q was as good as any time I'd seen them at Fitzgerald's.
Alas, it was the end of the road for the 'Mats -- as Gene said, the band
left the stage one by one, handing off their instruments to roadies
during the final encore, "Hootenanny". It was actually kind of a clever
farewell, ending it all with replacements for the Replacements.
As I was walking out of Grant Park, I passed a tour bus that obviously
belonged to the 'Mats. In the window sign that usually indicates a
destination or contains the word "Charter", it instead read, "Nobody You
Know".
