I have a 40GB iPod -- it's an earlier one with the crap battery.   Apple 
replaced it with a refurb replacement iPod for $70.  I haven't let it 
run down completely, but I think now it's good for at least 2-3 hours.  
I think it was a good investment rather than chucking it.
