Jamie, other than your computer hard-drive crashing, there is no reason to
need to go through other software to move files from your iPod to your
computer. When you sync your iPod with your computer, iTunes automatically
moves files to and from your iPod. The catch is that when you sync, every
file on your iPod must have a match in iTunes. Never a problem, unless your
hard-drive crashed.

One big advantage of iTunes/iPod is the ability to use iTunes to customize
your music playlists (called smart playlists). For instance, I like to
listen to my entire library on random. But with the nature of the random
function, there is a chance that I will hear the same song more than once in
a given day, week or month. To avoid this, I have created a smart playlist
the contains songs that have not been played by me in the past 2 months,
then listen to that on random. Everytime I plug the iPod into my computer,
iTunes automatically updates my playlist, so I always have fresh tunes to
listen to. The possibilities with smart playlists are endless.

While we're on the subject of iPods, another way I use it is to listen to
college radio programs (mostly WMBR's Breakfast of Champions and Lost and
Found). I use software called Replay Radio to record a radio show on my
computer and split it into a series of 2 minute files. I then transfer the
files to my iPod and listen during my daily commute. The two-minute
increments allow me to skip past songs I don't like without missing the next
song. Works pretty well.
