It was "Smokestack Lightning", actually. I'm willing to wager a few
shekels that it was the first Howlin' Wolf cover in IPO history.
I'm waiting until next Monday to post my full IPO summary, but I'll say
for the moment that Pezband wasn't one of my favorites. Don't get me
wrong; I enjoyed them. But Mimi's singing isn't what it used to be (they
omitted several songs from their set list because his range has topped
out), and the old-school jams just didn't do it for me.
Still, it was great to see them onstage again in their old stomping
grounds. I think it was the first time in over twenty years that they
had played here in Chicago, and the crowd at the Abbey Pub was huge and
appreciative. To them, Pezband wasn't the also-ran in the Illinois power
pop sweepstakes behind Cheap Trick, Shoes, and Off Broadway back during
the New Wave era; they were simply a beloved local band with a very
strong catalog of songs.
The bands that really impressed me that night were the two that played
before Pezband: Columbus, OH stalwarts Watershed (terrific songs, even
better energy) and The Handcuffs (a revamped and punchier version of Big
Hello), whose new album *Model For A Revolution* is really solid.
