Just picked up and watched a DVD of an 1999 NRBQ show for Connecticut Public
Television. Wow!

Is there a better unsung live band out there? These guys never cease to
amaze me. Their playing is so loose and tight at the same time, it just
gives me goose bumps and an ear to ear grin from the second they hit the
stage to after they leave it. I don't know anyone else who approaches what
they do, with their seamless blend of effortless sweet pop songwriting,
raunchy roots rock and R&B, guitars that are one moment jangly and the next
moment kicking my ass across the room, virtuoso on acid keyboards that leave
my jaw hanging (how DOES he hit those notes while he's falling all over the
keyboard in that drunken dance? He's like Keith Moon on the piano!), wacko
humor, great originals, left field covers, soft sweet tender ballads and
foot stompin' rock and roll... Actually, about the best combo of virtuosity,
joy and fun I've ever witnessed. I've watched a few videos and sadly only
one live show, but they always seem to be loving the heck out of being on
stage with each other. They've been at it with virtually the same lineup
since the late 60s - they're like 4 people happily married to each other for
35 years. I could go on and on...

If any of the above interests you, get the video - or better yet, try to see
them live. Don't pass on the opportunity, I don't know how long they will
continue to go on -- but hopefully, they have a lot more miles in them!
