LOVE the FAB / pre-FAB lp analogies Gary!! In regards to Josh's quest
to hear Monkees' music, I'd like to add the LIVE 1967 disc (released
by Rhino in the summer of 1987) as the perfect companion piece to HQ,
it really captures the four guys performing at their loud, sloppy,
garage band "best".. To me, it's really interesting to hear some the
polished pop of the first two Monk's records
(Clarksville, ..Believer, ..Be Free) streamlined and cranked out
basic "power trio" style. Although he had to learn the drums on the
fly, Micky Dolenz has an "interesting" playing style on these live
recordings, not as hesitant as his playing on the HQ sessions, it
reminds me of Dennis Wilsons' thumping on the live Beach Boys stuff,
plus poor Micky had to also sing lead vocals on a fair amount of
these performances as well!
An interesting disc to me anyway.
