I think his debut album MARS PENNSYLVANIA is an absolute masterpiece,
possibly the great lost pop record of the mid-'90s. It's full-on
chamber pop, with a lot of Bacharach-style arrangements, and I also
hear a lot of 10cc, VENUS AND MARS-era Wings, KIMONO-era Sparks and
other bits of '70s AM pop. (He comes by it honestly: John
Southworth's dad is Peter Shelley, a noted British songwriter-producer
of the glam-rock era.) Conveniently, it's also the only one of his
albums that was released in the states; he's based in Toronto, and
most of his albums are difficult to locate outside of Canada, but you
can get them through his website, www.johnsouthworth.ca (sound files
are there as well).
I actually haven't gotten to his brand-new one yet, but in order of
preference, I'd say:
MARS, PENNSYLVANIA
YOSEMITE
SEDONA, ARIZONA
ROSE MILK, APPALACHIA (an EP of songs from SEDONA, ARIZONA redone with
an acoustic bluegrass band)
BANFF SPRINGS, TRANSYLVANIA
