So, my daughter's down for her morning nap, and I'm sitting here
watching VH1 Classic when
the video for "Not Tonight" comes on.
I've been reading some of the debate about The New Cars on here for
the last couple weeks, but
have been reserving judgment (despite my initial horror at the news
of this regrouping) until I could hear
the tunes for myself.
My God, they sound like a Cars tribute act. Rundgren is directly
aping Ocasek's vocals. The "gang" backing
vocals are right where they're supposed to be, and it sounds like
Greg Hawkes hasn't changed the settings
on his Prophet-5 since c. 1985-1986.
That said, it was a damned catchy tune. But I kept looking for Dave
Robinson behind the drumkit. And I know, sadly,
that we'll never see Ben Orr on bass.
My word ... who's damned idea was this???
It seems the height of cynicism to me. I guess the county fair
circuit beckons.
