You're absolutely right. Only a fool would take my advice. And have no zero
interest telling anyone what to think. But I have listened to enough
jazz to feel
comfortable yapping about likes & dislikes. Also, the warning label comment
was a note to myself.
I Didn't know Third Stream was associated with Charlie Mingus. Love his big
band output, plus he trained more working musicians than just about anyone.
I had never heard the term until Stewart's post and from quick reads on net saw
referrences to a kind of jazz I detest, which I would characterize as ECM
jazz (per the label). For me the rhythmic heart has been ripped out & replaced
intellectual doodlings. I don't question the skill & talent, but
dislike the output.
Jazz & Classical have been associated since Jelly Roll Morton (like most Creole
musicians formally trained and could read & write music - his compositions are
quite exacting & detailed), and from what I read Third Stream is targeted at
a specific school or genre. But obviously a snap judgement.
Give me jazz acknowledging its New Orleans & Kansas City roots, and what
came out of Philadelphia in the 60's (Archie Shepp & cohorts for example).
My musical heritage is Southern R&B & Rockabilly which forever taints my
interests.
