"Yes, and maybe then they'd get some serious consideration for the all-important (sarcasm) Rock & Roll Hall of Fame. That they aren't in yet is a crime, despite their "artificial" origins. You can't deny their influence on pop music and television, along with their talent and the quality of their music."

Great point. Did any of those Motown acts play any instruments? Did they write any of their own tunes? For the most part, no (there are major exceptions who were tremendous talents, of course, like Gaye and Robinson).

The Supremes, Martha and the Vandellas, The Four Tops, etc were as much a product of a 'music factory' (via Holland/Dozier/Holland) as the Monkees were, yet they're revered and continue to receive acclaim.

Probably the Monkees major 'curse' was the fact that much of the public felt 'tricked' into thinking they were something they weren't, and when the public found out the Monkees were quickly dismissed. This mind-set seems to have survived. Many perceive them as the original Milli Vanilli to a degree (I know, I know, that's awful and wrong, and I don't agree one iota with it).
