 I'd first ask for a rendition of a Way-Out's track by Splitsville!!!

But, if that didn't work, and you pressed on, I'd answer you like 
this (IMHO):
Start with either
"Headquarters" or "Pisces, Aquarius, Capricorn & Jones".
Digging in further:
"More of Monkees" followed by the first one "The Monkees".
Then 
"Head" (some great songs but lots of filler per it's a sound track to 
their movie)
 "The Birds, Bees and the Monkees" is still worth a shot but things 
are getting a little thinner in quality, in spots to me. 

All these are worth owning in my opinion. I listen to the first three 
I mentioned the most.

Rhino reissued these with bonus and alternative tracks. Nice artwork 
with interviews and so on.
