I just wanted to post a quick review of the fabulous Glenn Tilbrook solo /
acoustic show last night at the 8x10 club in Baltimore. I went expecting to
see him and his backing band The Fluffers, just like the great show I saw
last year at the same location (w/Sherman Boim). But this time it was just
Glenn and his 12-string for most of this night. I find it really amazing
that his voice is so amazingly similar to his recordings from nearly 30
years ago, and he hits practically all of the high notes without fail.
He played a healthy does of Squeeze tunes, including Take Me I'm Yours,
Someone Else's Bell, Piccadilly, Tempted, Hourglass, Black Coffee in Bed,
and many more. At one point, his 6-string electric/acoustic wasn't working
(bad battery), so he decided to take the show outside, this being a nice,
warm evening. After most of the crowd went out the front door, I followed
to find him standing on the hood of a hot BMW convertible, strumming a
guitar and singing "Goodbye Girl" with a large crowd singing along. I said
to the guy next to me, "Damn, I wonder whose car that is?!" He responded,
"It's mine, but I don't give a shit, this sounds great!" He then played
"Pulling Mussels (From The Shell)" and we all headed back indoors. The
crowd pulled back from the street and let an extremely backed-up line of
cars go by...
He played 2 wonderful sets, including a great version of "Another Nail In My
Heart." When I saw him last year, I was privileged to hear an amazing
recreation of one of my all-time favorite guitar solos. This time, someone
yelled out for it while he was playing his 12-string, and he suggested that
it might be better to wait until later in the set. He then paused, and said
he'd give it a shot anyway, and the solo sounded just wonderful on the
12-string.
He ended a fabulous night with a perfect version of "I've Returned," which
I had been yelling for all night. I honestly can't remember the last time I
saw someone play for a couple of hours to a loving crowd, and seem so
genuinely thrilled at the opportunity.
If you get a chance to see Glenn Tilbrook, don't pass it up. Go see him.
You won't regret it.
