"oh but I don't know what to say and I'm sure it won't make no difference anyway..."

This is very sad news to me. The Jacobites were one of my favorites bands in college after I heard the Twin/Tone compilation "The Ragged School". Twin/Tone swapped best-of compilations with Glass Records & Glass released The Replacements "Boink" as part of the deal. After that I started hunting for everything else (Eventually finding another favorite "The Bible Belt" with Waterboys Mike Scott, Anthony Thistlethwaite & Kevin Wilkinson [pre-Squeeze]) I continued to follow his career through his appearance in Milwaukee with a pick-up band this month. My friend Blaine & I used to play his songs all the time, eventually seeing Sudden & Kusworth in Green Bay a few years ago. The band joined us for dinner & graciously signed the stacks of vinyl & CD's that we had brought along, taking time to comment on each recording and posing for a stack of pictures. When Blaine called me to let me know he was playing in Milwaukee (a block from my old house) a few weeks ago, I considered flying
home to see the show, but passed due to the impending SXSW. Blaine once again dined with Nikki & after the show Nikki offer to have Blaine & I back him up his next time...unfortunately that won't happen. He was a true indie/DIY pioneer - still playing small clubs across the world with the occasional higher profile flirt (recorded an album with members of REM & Drivin N Cryin at the beginning of the 90's). Secretly Canadian reissued his catalog a few years ago and it's definitely worth checking out. I think "The Ragged School" is still a great place to start - Jangly acoustic guitars with a Thunders/Stones influence...the vocals may be an acquired taste for some here, but the songwriting is top-notch.
