best show was the Pop Culture Press (great mag!!) show at the
Dog & Duck - it turned into a power pop summit - great sets by
Stamey & Holsapple, Richie Furey, Golden Apples (wow! I hope
the cd is as good as the live set), Steve Wynn (holy sh*t! amazing!
Linda Pitmon is a female Keith Moon - wow!), Peter Case (great
balls to the wall set, harmonica rave ups, Plimsouls, etc - in fact,
it was interesting to note that all the veteran acts really went out of
their way to ratchet up the excitement), Translator (really good - i
was not really familiar with them - great drummer), IV Thieves get
a mixed review from me, they seemed a little reserved and only got going
when they amped up the more garage style tunes, the drummer went up front
to complain and swear yob-style at the sound guy for whatever which I
thought was
un-necessary as it was a family crowd and that kind of soured it for me...
first song is the soundcheck in those type of situations, no need for
the rock star trip. Anyway, yes, they (and their rock chick
girlfriends) looked great. Because of the rain, the plan to have a
simultaneous acoustic stage was dropped so
everyone played on the main stage thus the schedule ran late and I
MISSED Hoffs/Sweet and Jules Shear AND
Willie Nile as I had to go meet my wife for dinner (if you don't get
to a restuarant early you're waiting
forever for food). But, lots of folks wandering around (I spotted
Alejandro Escovedo). Nice set by
Matt Keating also. Props to Luke Torn & the PCP gang - if he does it
next year, this will be the must see
event for auditeers (first of all - it's FREEE!!!!) as the line up
this year was spectacular. I managed to do
a fair bit of schmoozing as a lot of folks I needed to see where
there (and I...uh....happened to have promo
cds with me...hahhaaaa....)...
Hopefully, someone will get a more comprehensive review online with
pix and such (there were phone
cameras galore...) but by far, the best gig of the festival.
Other SXSW standouts: New Pornographers (WITH Neko Case), Sam Roberts
(young Springsteen comparisons are justified, see him now in small
clubs while you can), Cuban Cowboys (goofy but fun), London Towers
(over the top stupid UK glam meets Generation X, nothing original
about them but great fun)... if I remember more, i'll put in next
post - i spent a whole day on a plane yesterday getting home.....
