check out the Essentials section, i believe the US store has a Power Pop
essentials list (try the Genre lists) it may be a good starting point
for non-US residents - the France, Canada, UK and German stores have the
Essentials feature (note that all lists are not the same in each country
due to track availability; all have country specific lists not available
elsewhere). These are like greatest hits lists for various artists and
genres.
