I think for the most part remastering is a good idea. Most of the classic 
lps released on cd from the 60's and 70's were originally just straight 
transfers from the original master tape (or even 2nd generation safety 
master tapes). Nowadays, with 24 bit (or higher) technology, better A/D 
convertors and much better dithering you can achieve a lot more clarity. The 
commercially available Beatles catalog is a joke to say the least. Dr. 
Ebbetts has made a career out of transferring pristine original vinyl Beatle 
lps to cd and his efforts are incredible. I gave a copy of the Ebbetts 
version of Abbey Road to Mitch Easter and he was astounded by the sound 
compared to his regular Apple copy.

Remixing on the other hand is almost always horrid. I bought the remixed 
versions of the Allman Bros. at the Fillmore and Layla and hated both.
