The guy must have 50 or 60 albums, all kinds of stuff! there is no way to
get "his best tracks" in any compact form. My guess is that the "best
of's that you see have just the obvious stuff like Don't Eat The Yellow
Snow and Valley Girl.
I don't even have nearly all his stuff. I always say get Freak Out, it
really is a blueprint for all the music he did over the next 25 years or
so: rock, do wop, jazz, avant guard, and classical... But I also like:
One Size Fits All, Live At The Roxy (Or the Helsinki Concert, which is
the same band, similar set list, and a bit longer) Zoot Allures, Hot
Rats, Shut Up And Play Your Guitar, FZ In OZ. and Yellow Shark. I could
pick a lot of favorite songs not on those, but it's just too confusing.
The live and Archive things that have come out since he died are often
very interesting. They are bits of live material, band chat and more...
The fans seem pretty upset that Gail Zappa has sort of lost the thread.
Seems Frank left a lot of stuff ready for release, but the program has
lost steam of late.
There are probably widely different theories, but what are you gonna do?
