Hey Steve,
Well you picked a good song from LKJ. If you like that song and style..then
I would recommend his first three LPs;
Dread Beat An' Blood (1978)
Forces Of Victory (1979)
Bass Culture (1980)
If you can find songs to download from that time period you are going to be
doing pretty well. My personal fave is Forces Of Victory, but the other ones
are pretty good. LKJ is a dub poet. That is, his primarily a poet who had
his poems set to original dub music. In LKJ's case he has almost exclusively
worked with Dennis Bovell. Mr Bovell is a long time musician in the UK who
use to be part of a UK reggae band called Matumbi (who had a hit that the
punks use to play back in the late 70s called "Point of View"). Anways, the
mixture of LKJ's poems and voice..mixed with Bovell's dubs is quite striking
and is especially hot on that Forces of Victory lp. He just released a
second live LP with the Dennis Bovell Dub Band that was recorded recently at
a show in Paris. The band is tight and LKJ, looking like an out of
place-academic, chants his poetry while swinging his hips to the riddim - in
full effect! There is also a DVD available which is quite good and captures
the Dub Band laying down the tracks live. All in all..very satisfying.
If you like LKJ, then you might also want to explore a couple of other dub
poets. Mutabaruka is very good, as was Michael Smith. Michael Smith released
an lp called "Mi Cyaan Believe It". After the release of this Lp (early
80s), he was killed for political reasons in Jamaica. Gun violence in
Jamdown is quite harsh and it has spilled over to the jamdown community in
NYC. Unfortunately, Michael Smith has joined a long list of reggae artists
that have been violently killed: (Peter Tosh, King Tubby, Nitty Gritty,
Tenor Saw..to name just a few..trust me..there are lots of others)
anyway,,,enjoy LKJ..if that is all you ever listen to..you are still doing
pretty well
