I've got a ways to go and hope to have my prelimary
tally done today. Wow, you guys and gals unleashed a
lot of votes under the wire!

Currently, I'm tallying to a bootleg I picked up a
couple of weeks ago -- Bob Seger -- Lookin' Back.
This is a collection of early Seger singles. The
tunes are a melange of styles, as Seger dabbled in a
bunch of areas -- some folk rock, one surf-type tune,
a comic number ("The Ballad of the Yellow Berets", a
Sgt. Barry Sadler parody), an actual ballad that makes
stuff like "We've Got Tonight" more tolerable, and
some smoking R & B spiked garage rock. The best songs
on here are awesome -- the original "Heavy Music", the
dramatic "East Side Story", the bopping "Chain
Smokin'" and his top protest number "2 + 2 = ?". On
some songs, his famous rasp is subdued, but when he
gets wailing -- I know Seger is considered
ridiculously unhip by some, but he has a great voice
for R & B based rock -- it's a shame he can't go back
to that.
