The Spin Doctors.
A little less jam band/Dead production and they were perfect for powerpop.

As I listen to _Pocket full of kryptonite_ now, I'm questioning my own genre
filing for it. I've got it in my College Rock folder, but strongly
considering moving it to powerpop.

"jimmy olsen blues," "little miss can't be wrong," "two princes," "how could
you want him"

Here's one that might seem a strech too...Soul Coughing.
Lyrics were definitely an issue because...well...its more stream of
consciousness than anything, but some songs with a strong change in
production were total powerpop. "Circles,"

Need more proof? Listen to Mike Doughty's solo album _Haughty Melodic_
"madeline and nine" is amazing. "White Lexus"

Had I voted in the audities poll this year, It would have been #1 for me. I
just didn't listen to enough albums to submit.

What non-power pop band could have, with some editing; different production;
and where applicable, reduced sex appeal, made a great power pop band?

My first nomination may be too obvious, because in my mind they practically
were one in all but marketing and lyrical content: Van Halen (DLR edition).

I'll also go out on a limb and suggest that, with a sturdy razor blade and a
device for evening out odd time signatures, Yes could have been turned into
a very cool power pop band.
