That scene struck me as weird, too.  In fact, all through the scenes 
with Geiger, I kept thinking "Would Mr. Hipster Indie A&R Dude 
*really* be all that impressed with this guy?  Wouldn't he be trying 
to sign some band that sounded like Deerhoof?"
