Actually it does. When I bought it it made little impact on me, and I
probably set it on the shelf for two months. I thought they were just a
group of followers, like, say, the D4 or the Datsuns were followers of the
whole garage thing in 2002--but I was definitely wrong, and when I came back
to it I appreciated it more and more, which only continues. Songs like
"Apply Some Pressure" (which is one of the year's finest singles) only
develop more hooks as time goes on, and this album stands as one of the most
consistent as part of the new british new-new wave, in a large part because
of the solid songwriting and the band's way of folding strings of hooks into
each other, and the way that they tend to take multiple listens to fully
reveal themselves. The album wound up around #13 on my list, but I feel like
in the long run it's going to even claw its way up a few more spots.
Also, speaking of eMusic, I'm considering finally getting a subscription
myself. is it true that they have the entire SST and Stiff catalogs, as well
as a lot on Merge and Matador? The only thing I DONT like is that you can't
browse the offerings before signing up, and I've already had a free trial
before so I can't do it again. --Jason
