Been trying to get to this the past several weeks. Nothing like a deadline to motivate.
Anyway, thanks to all who contribute. I have a large list of new music to explore.
In order:
1. You Are (variations) Â Composer: Steve Reich, Conductor: Grant Gershon, Performer: Maya Beiser, Los Angeles Master Chorale. The two compositions are superb, performances impeccable, and engineering and recording top-notch. A major work from one of our greatest living composers.
2. The Click Five  Greetings From Imrie House  instantly disposable, plastic, artificial pap with no redeeming social value. Manufactured and stylized emptiness with a studied youthful angst as phony and trite as the lead guitar licks. Snotty youth and brash self-confidence as propelled through a black hole of corporate pandering. shooting fish in a bucket. I got it just to get a quick sugar high and figuring it would last a week or so in rotation. Instead, second most-played music of the year for me. I love it. Makes me happy.
3. Alabama 3  Outlaw  I think this was only a UK release.
4. Sufjan Stevens  Illinoise  had to come back to it at least 5 times before I could enjoy it.
5. Josh Rouse  Nashville
6. Sonata Form  Harmony, Courage
7. Brian Eno  Another Day on Earth
8. Jimmy Webb  Twilight of the Renegades
9. Swan Dive  Popcorn & a Momma Who Loves Me Too
10. Wilco  Kicking Television
11. Big Star  In Space
12. Boards Of Canada  The Campfire Headphase
13. The White Stripes  Get Behind Me Satan
14. New Pornographers  Twin Cinema  boy, this took a long time to grow on me.
15. Philip Glass  Les Enfants Terrible (soundtrack)
16. Brian Wilson  All I Really Want For Christmas  what a band.
17. The Lovemakers  Times of Romance
18. Fripp & Eno  The Equatorial Stars
19. Ben Folds  Songs For Silverman
20. Beck  Guero
21. Nick Lowe  Jesus of Cool, oops  sorry, a flashback
Things I really liked this year:
The Move  Message From The Country
Thelonious Monk Quartet with John Coltrane at Carnegie Hall
The Band  A Musical History
Jimmy Webb Box Set
Bette Midler  Peggy Lee Songbook
