Hi,
O.K., I've had some time to think about it, and here's my favorite albums of 2005:
1. The New Pornographers - "Twin Cinema"
An improvement on the first two albums, and they were good albums. Maybe shows a little more diversity than the first two albums.
2. The Pernice Brothers - "Discover A Lovlier You"
Their best album since their debut "Overcome By Happiness". Maybe their most Pop album so far.
3. The Magic Numbers - self titled
This is some of the best new pop music that I heard in 2005.
4. The 88s - "Over And Over"
Very good. Sounds like a T-Rex, Bono, Paul McCartney collaboration, if such a thing were to happen.
5. Paul Weller - "As Is Now"
Probably more of a Rock album, but still one of the best albums that I heard this year.
6. Teenage Fanclub - "Man Made"
This was a grower to me. The production wasn't as slick a some of their earlier albums, but still really good songs.
7. The Scruffs - "Swingin' Singles"
I don't know where to count this one. Not Lame said it was new in 2005, but it came with a 2003 date on it. I don't know if it was released in U.K. in 2003, and in the United States in 2005? At any rate, it's an excellent album, and I discovered it in 2005. A softer style than their earlier work. "Swingin' Singles" reminds me a bit of the Beatles' "Revolver"-era
8. Deathray Davies - "The Kick And The Snare"
Great Power-Pop junkfood. You sort of get the feeling that they're borrowing from other bands; that you've heard this all before. But on repeated listens, it's hard to identify just where they are getting it from. Just a goodtime Rockin' album.
9. The Posies - "Every Kind of Light"
Welcome return by the Posies. Does a good job of showing their heavier, lighter, and more in the middle styles of playing.
10. The Click Five - "Greetings From Imrie House"
A lot better Power-Pop than I would have expected from a "boy band". Hearkens back to the classic influences like: Cheap Trick and Dwight Twilley in places.
11. Super Furry Animals - "Love Kraft"
A good orchestral Pop/Rock album; it seems to have a darker personality, to me, than "Rings Around The World" or "Phantom Power".
12. Neon - "Hit Me Again"
A nice sharp little EP. Reminiscent of early Cheap Trick.
13. Paul McCartney - "Chaos And Creation In The Backyard"
Paul shows he's still got the songwriting chops. This is darker than his usually work. He could have used one or two of his usual style songs to break up the mood a little, then maybe this would have been a Top 5 album for the year.
14. Big Star - "In Space"
A new Big Star album is always welcome. Though it's not up to the standard of "#1 Record" or "Radio City", it's definitely got it's moments that make it work having. Drummer Jody Stephens shows unexpected talents as a songwriter.
15. Fountains of Wayne - "Outta State Plates"
The Fountains are such a good band, that even their leftover, and outakes beat most bands well thought out, intended albums.
