Gotta agree with Stuart, J&MC were at their best when they were down and
durty and had the "noise-thing" going. My mum still thinks their first
album sounds like someone hoovering the carpet and listening to a pop
record simultaneously.
Mention of "Just Like Honey" made me think back 20 years, when every
Friday I supported my pal Mike on guitar, playing covers in a tiny
Edinburgh bar. Mike did all the singing and the songs were the
standard 50's and 60's staples. Every week he took a 10 minute break
halfway through and one week he said "Bob, why don't you do something?"
So I thought, why not. I launched into a solo cover of "Just Like
Honey" to the consternation of most of the 12 beer drinkers. All, in
fact, except one young leather-clad biker guy, his leg in a plaster-cast
propped on top of the beer-soaked table, who roared,
"Jeeeeesus'n'MaaaryChain.... fuggin' magic big man!!". It made my night :-)
