Not a bad idea. I think it would also be instructive to also mention
where we first heard of these bands.

1. The Decemberists -- Picaresque (Kill Rock Stars)

I actually have two copies of this: I bought the CD at Newbury Comics
Alewife, and I bought the LP from Insound.com, because it has a side's
worth of songs that aren't on the CD. (Discovery: WMBR played a lot
of songs from their first album.)

2. Sylvie Lewis -- Tangos and Tantrums (Cheap Lullaby)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

3. The Get Quick -- How the Story Goes (Rainbow Quartz)

promo from Parasol (Discovery: promo from Parasol)

4. Madagascar -- Forced March (Western Vinyl)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

5. Michael Penn -- Mr. Hollywood Jr., 1947 (Mimeograph)

Newbury Comics Harvard Square (Discovery: I was working at a radio
station in Clovis, NM, in 1989 when "No Myth" showed up on the
playlist)

6. The New Pornographers -- Twin Cinema (Matador)

Newbury Comics #1 (Discovery: Audities, although I was an old Zumpano
fan)

7. Saint Etienne -- Tales From Turnpike House (Sanctuary)

Newbury Comics #1 (Discovery: attracted to cover art of their first
album at a Sound Warehouse in Houston, summer 1992)

8. Sanawon -- Tiny Airplane (Suburban Home)

eMusic (Discovery: my friend Jonathan emailed me saying "You HAVE to
hear this!")

9. Nouvelle Vague -- Nouvelle Vague (Luaka Bop)

Newbury Comics Alewife (Discovery: Salon's daily download.)

10. Pine *am -- Pull the Rabbit Ears (Eenie Meenie)

eMusic (Discovery: Jonathan again)

11. Franz Ferdinand -- You Could Have It So Much Better (Sony)

Newbury Comics #1 (Discovery: FNX jumped onto "Take Me Out" early.)

12. The El Michels Affair -- Sounding Out the City (Fastlife)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

13. Piney Gir -- Peakahokahoo (Greyday)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

14. Deerhoof -- The Runners Four (5 Rue Christine)

Newbury Comics Harvard Square (Discovery: WMBR again)

15. Vav Jungle -- Canadiana Striptease (Creamy Bass)

CD Baby (Discovery: the almighty CBC Radio 3 podcast)

16. Minamina Goodsong -- The Transcendental Game of Zen (Arcthefinger)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

17. Miss Mary -- Ready 2 Pop (Dren)

eMusic (Discovery: reviewed her first album for Amplifier several
years ago)

18. Caradefuego -- Masculina (V2)

eMusic (Discovery: eMusic)

19. Hexes and Ohs -- Goodbye Friend, Welcome Lover (Noise Factory)

bought online direct from label (Discovery: CBC Radio 3 again)

20. Montag -- Alone, Not Alone (Carpark)

Amazon (Discovery: Amazon's online recommendation engine, because I
caught up on a lot of other experimental Canadian ambient pop stuff
this year)

So:

Brick and mortar: 7, all from Newbury Comics
eMusic: 9
CD Baby: 1
Direct From label: 1
Amazon: 1
Promo copy: 1
