As in previous years I had a hard time just keeping up with all the great music I've "discovered" being on this list. Here's what I did get to and enjoyed:

  1. Josh Rouse - Nashville

First introduced to me by fellow Auditeer Pat Bultemeier around the time that "Home" came out, I was immediately struck by his soothing silky smooth voice and pop/alt country sensibility. 2003's "1972" was in my top picks of the year and remains to this say a CD that is rarely far away. "Nashville" is a fitting successor.

  2. IKE - In Real Life

What can you say about these guys (and gal)? Hell, in my "parallel universe" John Faye and Cliff Hillis are big stars.

  3. The Supahip - Seize The World

I swear that Michael Carpenter doesn't even realize how talented he is. Teaming up with Mark Moldre was a great idea.

  4. Iron and Wine - Woman King

Sam Beam was my "discovery" of the year and "Woman King" is simply a brilliant CD. "Jezebel" was my favourite song of the year (performed wonderfully live at the Warfield in San Francisco).

  5. Iron and Wine/Calexico - In The Reins

An interesting collaberation and although I'm not a fan of Calexico the combination did work, especially live.

  6. The Churchills - Odds of Winning

Have these guys produced a bad effort yet? Not in my ears.

  7. Jim Boggia - Safe in Sound

Says Mr. Brodeen "Boggia writes soothing, quieting, sublime melodies inside songs that vary from the introspective to the rocking, upbeat band pop." Agreed.

  8. James Cooper - Second Season

Another Notlame reco that I took a flyer on and was glad I did.

  9. Fountains of Wayne - Out of State Plates

I know, probably not eligible, but even their B sides sound good to me.

  10. John Davis - s/t

Former Superdrag front man cleans up, finds religion and puts out a real gem.

Waiting patiently for the next CD from: The Rosenbergs/David Fagin, Cloud Eleven/Rick Gallego, Ken Sharp (put down that pen and pick up that guitar Ken!), The Scones/Martin Shears (6 years since the brilliant "Do You Hear?"), Cliff Hillis, Copperpot, Tom Hooper (ex Grapes of Wrath), Bob Segarini's "Grand Pop", Ian Thomas (best live shows of 2005).

Biggest disappointment of 2005: The "retirement" of Doug Powell from making music.

  Carry on.
