I didn't want to offend fans of these acts but I guess the only way of doing
it is to come right out shooting from the hip. These acts have the
distinction of being self-absorbed or actuated or realized because they at
least appear to be unrelenting in their "vision" of what they think their
music should be presented as -- without the benefit or hinderence of
labels/producers/etc from the mainstream. I think calling them
"self-indulgent" would be unfair, but "self-important" would be a little
more to the point because only their inner muse allows them to see the
direction or sound they're unleashing on the world. Maybe others "get it"
and that's great for the ego-stroked cult idol crown that many musicians
sometimes would like to wear, but ultimately the appeal is limited and the
acts tend to self-destruct under the weight of their own gravitas.

I just find it discouraging that acts take the toughest road to realize
their potential and create their art in vaccuums. Without the benefit of a
wide audience chances are really good that all will be ignored. I'm not
suggesting dumming it down for the lowest common denominator (we have major
labels cranking out bimbo pop for that), but at least look at their cutting
edge re-invention of the popular music wheel with an audience in mind that,
on occasion, likes to be challenged as opposed to challenging the audience
with every note and nuance.
