That's actually Harvard Square -- in fact, John Harvard's is right
next door to the Garage, home of the Newbury Comics I was mentioning.
It's pretty good, but for bar food in Harvard Square, I would also
recommend Grendel's Den (on Winthrop Street, in a basement just behind
the common) and Charlie's Kitchen on Eliot Street, which does killer
steak tips and has the best jukebox in town.

But the best bar in town is the original Bukowski's, on Dalton Street
just off Boylston in the Back Bay. The food is excellent (disclosure:
my friend Jason's brother is the head chef), and along with the
incredibly extensive beer menu, they also have a handy feature called
The Wheel Of Indecision: the bartender spins the wheel and whatever it
lands on, that's what you get. There's the small risk that you'll be
stuck with a Schlitz, but it's a small price to pay.
