Cousteau has released three albums - two in the US.

Cousteau (the self-titled first album) and Sirena were both grounded in the
songs of Davey Ray Moore who played piano in the band. Moore left after
Sirena. The vocals are by Liam McKahey.

The sound is moody, romantic and wistful. The references to Scott Walker
are apt. Though less "serious" and art crowd approved, they can be compared
favorably to Neil Hannon and The Divine Comedy.

After Sirena, Moore left the band for a solo career. His solo album,
Telepathy was released in '04. It is equally romantic but without McKahey
that Scott Walker vocal sound is gone.

Rather than give up the band the other members carried on writing tunes and
recorded Nova Scotia which was released in '05. To my ears, while still
romantic and dramatic it is looser and has a rougher sound than the first
two and that works equally well.

I saw them at Joe's Pub shortly after the first album was released and was
impressed by their ability to deliver that luxurious sound in the intimacy
of NY's best club. That evening was broadcast live over a radio station -
WFUV or WFMU - and I would love to find a copy.

I think they have finally given up fighting Jacques' estate and changed the
band's name to Moreau. Nova Scotia will be released under that name in
January of this year.

Now I have to go check out Tindersticks and Portishead!

Pretty decent description...they have at least two CDs out. I likes 'em!

Cousteau reminds me of a cross between the Tindersticks and Portishead. Kind
of
an orchestral trip hop sound with a Scott Walker influence. Since you like
Scott
Walker you might like them as well.

I quite like what I have heard by them. I know they have at least one full
length US release available.
i hope that helps.

I recently heard of this band, via another site, called Cousteau.
Suggested influences are Roxy Music, Scott Walker. Sounds like they
might be up my alley. Any thoughts? Obviously I ask here per the esteem
I hold for the opinions of many members on this list. As always, thanks
for any input in advance.
