To my ears, the Brion version (which in all fairness has been disavowed by
both Jon and Fiona as not being a sanctioned, properly-mixed version of any
of the tracks) has a lot more life and interest. Instrumental tracks
breathe and really add to the atmosphere. Mike Elizondo's take is much more
synth-y and much more wooden, again, to my ears. Fiona's vocals are
considerably more polished and confident on the official release, but in
some cases, particularly "Oh Well", a lot is lost from the *oomph* of the
tunes with that added polish and confidence.
All that said, I never really loved either version, but of the two, the
"original" floats my boat much more.
Side note, it may be that the Brion-produced versions will see an official
release someday, if intimations by both Fiona and Jon can be taken at face
value (and if Sony wants to front the $ -- there's a big if if ever there
was one).
Just my coupla off-the-cuff cents.
Christopher
