Two things: the Martin Short season happened while Dick Ebersol was
running the show -- Lorne Michaels had nothing to do with SNL between
1980 and 1985. Also, most fans of the show (including me) consider
the Martin Short/Chris Guest/Billy Crystal season one of the better
ones.
Whenever I hear someone go on about awful this cast or that cast is,
I'm reminded of the fact that people have been saying this since the
second season: according to Tom Shales' oral history (which is really
good read if you're into this sort of thing), when Chevy Chase left
and was replaced by Bill Murray, people went ON and ON about how awful
the new guy was, to the point that Murray eventually wrote a sketch
about how he wasn't fitting in and no one liked him.
I'm also reminded of the fact that I saw the 1985-86 season, the one
with Robert Downey Jr and Anthony Michael Hall. I don't care what
people say about the last few seasons, NOTHING can be as bad as that
crap.
