I don't see it as exclusively an "indie rock" trend. I think that all forms
of popular music are currently suffering from a surfeit of "anybody can be a
star" talent. Ultimately it stems from the social importance of appearing
to be something special rather than actually having that spark of difference
that sets the "artist" apart from the crowd. Obviously a bit of charisma
goes a long way while true talent gets short shrift.

Of course, shams like "American Idol" and a society that elevates a
non-entity like Paris Hilton to celebrity status shouldn't be expected to
recognize talent, and the record industry can only sell what they understand
- which isn't talent, but rather personality. The only way we can ever see
that change is to continue to try being discerning with our dollars and
avoid the crap.

As far as The Decemberists go, I have no opinion as I haven't heard them.
Although I am a bit trepidacious having read comments about poor singing -
as you can gather I happen to like performers that can carry a tune - I
would be willing to hear a tune or two.
