I've tried my best to like The Decemberists, but there's something about
them that just rubs me the wrong way.

But on a positive note, the leader of the band wrote a book about The
Replacements' Let It Be as part of the excellent 33 1/3 book series with
each book dedicated to a specific album. Some books are an analysis of
the songs or recording while others discuss things like the musical
climate at the time that album was released. Colin's book is an almost
sweet look back at his childhood and what Let It Be meant to him. Check
out this series if you can. Each book is pocketsized and only lists for
$9.99.

On a totally unrelated note, I got a copy this week of the new Tommy
Keene CD. Not due out until the spring, it hasn't left my CD for 3 days.
It's a for sure Top 10 of 2006. The man can do no wrong in my eyes.

Don't remember if this has been mentioned or not, but Tommy is the
guitarist in Robert Pollards' new touring band. Nice combo.

Hmm...I picked this up based on raves from folks on
the Big Takeover list, and one of things that
immediately struck me was that these folks clearly
sounded like they were into Neutral Milk Hotel. I
think The Decemberists disc is a mixed bag -- some
good stuff, but at times they can be somewhat precious
and overwrought.

Side note -- the lead singer of The Decemberists is
going out on the road on his own in early 2006.
