Chalk it up to the writers and Lorne Michael's desperation. Short was
parachuted into SNL with his Ed Grimley as a means to save another bad
season of SNL. Short managed to play Ed and other characters on SCTV quite
succinctly...where these characters belonged. It would be like taking Don
Adam's Maxwell Smart and inserting him into SNL. It wouldn't work because
the show's situation premise was the basis for the one-dimensional character
development.
