This show is the latest in a long running series of musical overviews of
themes important to pop culture. The Beat Goes On was held at The Bottom
Line for years and has shifted to varying venues since its closing. There
is a house band that plays all night and individual singers and musicians
step up to perform a single song centered around the evening's theme. The
band is directed by Andy Burton who recently played keyboards with the dB's.
They have done The British Invasion, The American Response (to the British
Invasion), The Brill Building, The Rat Pack in Vegas, Nuggets and many
others. It is a real New York scene and I have never had a bad - or even a
mediocre - time. Some highlights have actually come from non-New Yorkers
such as Mitch Easter playing I Can Hear The Grass Grow.
The Beat Goes On is also responsible for my meeting some wonderful people
such as Sherman Boim, Jennie Barnett and Ray Brizzi. They were all met
on-line the old fashioned way; waiting for the doors to the show to open.
Can't wait for next week's Christmas show.
