Someone else may have already pointed this out, but...

I think the loudness thing has as much to do with the size of the room the
band played and where you were in relation to the speakers, as it does the
volume the band is playing. For instance, my loudest band experience was
seeing the Romantics at the Decade in Pittsburgh in about 80 or 81 - their
debut album tour. The room was only about 30 to 40 or so feet from the
stage to the back of the room, and about twice as wide, not counting the
connecting bar room on stage right. So, I was maybe 25 feet from the
speakers, and the band just plain rocked my head off. It was a great show,
but my ears were ringing for days.

I'd seen the Who and J Geils and Aerosmith and all the big loud hard rock
acts back in the day, and I'm sure they all played much louder than the
Romantics did - they certainly had multiple times the wattage at their
disposal - but the room and distance just weren't the same...

The Decade was a great place to see live rock and roll. The Police and
Pretenders and many many others, mostly at the early stages of their early
careers... Even a few surprise appearances by Bruce Springsteen (he was
buddy buddy with Joe Grushecky of the Iron City Houserockers, who were kind
of like the Decade's house band back in the late 70s/early 80s; Bruce was
known to get on stage with him when the E Street Band was in town). Now,
the Decade is some lame restaurant, I think...
