I agree: "Minor Cords & Major Themes" is never far from my CD player (or these days, my iRiver Digital Music Player). "Everyone Can Fly" is pure pop heaven.
I bought "Flippin' Out" and didn't like it much. Didn't sound like the same band. Have never bought "Pacific Ocean Blues" or anything else.
So, was "Minor Chords..." an abberation for the band where everything just came together for one CD? What else should I check out?

I saw them on a triple-bill with The Gigolo Aunts and a local Philly band
called The Red King at
the Trocadero Theatre in 1999, and had the same complaint.
They were, it seemed, one of those bands that equated excessive volume with
rocking out (a matter for another thread, I know).
But while that might work at a Dinosaur Jr. show, it just blew out all the
subtlety that colors the tunes. The bombast was just too
much, and I'm pretty sure I left before their set was over. This despite the
fact that I was just over the moon with "Utopia Parkway" at the time.
Gigolo Aunts, meanwhile, were the most likable bunch of guys I've run ever
had the pleasure of chatting with.
At that point, I'd just moved up to Philly from Winston-Salem, N.C., and he
and I spent a fair bit of time talking about the genius of Mitch Easter. He
was also kind enough to sign my poster for "Minor Chords, Major Themes," and
it's still hanging in my downstairs office. That record, for my money, is
one of the great and underappreciated gems of the last 10 years.
