Hi all--I was already in college when the Kiss "phenomenon" broke out, thus
making me too old to join the Kiss Army. I wouldn't have served if drafted,
and would have filed for C.O. exemption on the grounds that their records
were bad.
However, I have enjoyed these "decades of decibels" posts. For my money,
the loudest band of all time has to be the Who. For years, I always received
the Guinness Book for Christmas. In that annual publication, the Who
reigned supreme, based on the decibel level of an outdoor gig in England
during the 70s. It was something akin to sticking your head into the engine
of a 747 during takeoff.
My first rock concert experience was seeing hometown heroes Iron Butterfly
at the San Diego Sports Arena, that dungeon of sound immortalized by Cameron
Crowe in "Almost Famous." "Iron Butterfly," wrote the late Lillian Roxon,
"were the original heavy-metal Cro-Magnons. Their low-browed,
jutting--jawed sound conjured up visions of steamer trunks being dropped
several flights of stairs." On that memorable night back in 1968, IB
performed a 30-plus minute version of "In-a-Gadda-Da-Version." Since I admit
publicly that I was there, I guess I have no reason to knock the Kiss Army.
But the Who....brilliant and LOUD!! Caught the 1971 "Who's Next" tour. All I
could hear for a week was something that sounded like the EBS radio test
pattern.!
