The first in the "Maybe This Christmas" series has a few real gems, most
notably Dan Wilson's original "What a Year for a New Year," Phantom Planet's
"Winter Wonderland," and Neil Finn's sublime "Sweet Secret Peace."

I'm a big fan of the XFM comp, too, particularly The Dandy Warhols doing
"Little Drummer Boy" and the Webb Brothers' "Every Day is Christmas."

The Aimee Mann/Michael Penn collaboration (with Jon Brion sharing writing
and producing credit) "Christmastime" is probably my fave pop holiday tune
of recent years. Showed up originally on the "Hard Eight" soundtrack and
has popped up on a few compliations since. Newly available through eMusic
on "Jingle Bell Rock."

And in the Realm of the Shameless Plug, there's a fun little project I work
on with a circle of music pals called Gastronomical Unit, and we've done a
Christmas album every other year for the past 15 years. A sampler of some
of the more listenable (and copyright-free) material is available at CDBaby.
http://cdbaby.com/cd/gastronomical -- I'm particularly proud of my
arrangement of The Wassail Song...

Ho ho.
