I once saw The Ramones at the old Chestnut Cabaret in Philadelphia (1986 or so) and it was incredibly loud - but in a good way (HEY HO!).

A few months later my Dad and I went to see blues guitarist Roy Buchanan at the same club and he played so loud my fillings were coming out of my teeth. We lasted 3 songs.

I also saw that Neil Young/Social Distortion/Sonic Youth tour when it played the Civic Center in Philadelphia. SD kicked it off at high volume, and each successive act band got progressively louder. Neil and Crazy Horse damn near blew the roof off the place.
