Hi Drew,
I saw it on Monday. I thought that it was a really good movie! It interested me in Johnny Cash's music a little more than I have been so far. Is there a good album by him that anyone would recommend?
I know a couple of local guys (I'm from Arkansas) that are kin to Johnny Cash. I was in a band about six or seven years ago; and the drummer's grandmother was Ray Cash's (Johnny's father) cousin, whatever kind of relation that makes him. He knew he was related to Cash a little, but he wasn't much of a fan, as far as listening to him or anything.
Joaquin Pheonix and Reese Witherspoon did a good job of singing and playing their own instruments too. At least I read somewhere that it's really them singing and playing. Pheonix's voice isn't quite as deep as I think Johnny Cash's was (maybe only 85-percent as deep), but it was passable for movie purposes (at least he didn't sound like Michael Jackson singing Cash songs ;-) ). I wonder what kind of musical backgrounds they have, or if they just crash coursed for the movie?
Take care,
Large

Just got back from the Johnny Cash movie. Pretty much a thumbs-up from me.
As good as Phoenix and Witherspoon are, they've got some nice support. I was
particularly impressed with Shelby Lynne as Johnny's mama. They had a good
Elvis and Jerry Lee, and I even dug the stunt casting cameo of Shooter
Jennings as grandpa Waylon.
Anybody else see it yet?
