This question comes up all the time, and while I agree with the underlying
sentiment, I insist on taking the silly concept of the RnRHOF far more seriously
than anything associated with Wenner should really merit. Because it's OUR
music. I realize it's a cliche, but the music has meant so much to so many
of us, and I don't see anything wrong with honoring the artists who created
that music. So, while I understand that this whole RnRHOF scam is controlled by
dicks 'n' weasels, I nonetheless have a passionate, visceral (perhaps
masochistic) interest in who gets honored, who gets snubbed, who gets in that
shouldn't, yadda and yadda.
Am I being stupid? Well, yeah. But I was THRILLED when The Ramones
were inducted. I was appalled when Jackson Browne was inducted. I remain
mystified that The Hollies have never even been nominated. A couple of years
back, we did an episode of THIS IS ROCK 'N' ROLL RADIO playing nothing but acts
that should be in the Rock 'n' Roll Hall of Fame, but (at that point) had not
been so honored. It was one of our best shows, with The Sex Pistols, The
Hollies, The Stylistics, Paul Revere & the Raiders, Badfinger, The Ventures, The
Stooges, The New York Dolls, The Monkees, The Dave Clark 5, The Shangri-Las,
Love, The Raspberries, Roxy Music, Alice Cooper and so many others.
Maybe it's my version of a Monday morning sports chat at the water
cooler, but the foibles of that overblown Hard Rock Cafe on the banks of Lake Erie
are an endless source of fascination for me.
