Hi all-It was 10 years ago this month that Dan McLain (AKA Country Dick
Montana) passed away doing what he loved--keeping the beat for one of the
most entertaining live bands of all time, the Beat Farmers. Country Dick's
legion of fans and fellow musicians will remember the drummer and Johnny
Cash-influenced vocalist with a special memorial show next Monday night at
the Casbah.
Among the tentative musical guests:
*Joey Harris. In addition to being a Beat Farmer, astute Auditees members
will recall an 80's powerpop gem of an album on MCA, JOEY HARRIS AND THE
SPEEDSTERS.
*The Off Brothers--Led by identical twins Douglas and David Farage, who
recorded an EP for MCA back in the 80s under the moniker of DFX2.
*Rosie Flores--Formerly of the Screamin' Sirens and a solo alt-country
performer.
*The Penetrators--A reunion of Dan's pre-Beat Farmers band, featuring
vocalist Gary Heffern, bassist Chris Sullivan, guitarist Chris Davies, and
keyboardist Jim Call.
*Mojo Nixon--Country Dick officiated at the wedding of Mojo and his bride,
held at a go-kart track in San Diego.
These are among the "usual suspects," but I imagine others will appear to
throw back a few, have a few laughs, and shed a few tears.I wouldn't miss
this for the world!
By the way, Rhino re-released TALES OF THE NEW WEST, the Farmers' first (and
best) album. A documentary on Country Dick's life in also in the works.
