My mom told me that, as a small child, I used to run into the room
whenever I'd hear the beginning strains of Petula Clark's "Downtown."
I still dig the song.
Other early favorite songs I liked a lot (before I bought my own singles)
include BJ Thomas' "Raindrops Keep Fallin' On My Head" and the
Beatles' "Do You Want To Know A Secret" and "I Should Have
Know Better"...later, when I started buying music with my allowance
money, the first single I purchased was T. Rex's "Bang A Gong"...
followed quickly by David Bowie's "Rebel Rebel" and Steely Dan's
"Rikki Don't Lose That Number"...I think "Garden Party" by Rick Nelson
was in there somewhere too...First albums I bought with my own cash
were the Beatles' "'red" compilation ('62-'66) and a Pickwick Beach Boys
"Best Of" compilation. This was in 1970, I think.
