Stretching my memory, the first song I remember thinking was just the
greatest ever was...wait for it...Johnny Cash, "Dirty Old Egg Sucking Dog,"
from "Johnny Cash at Folsom Prison." Certainly not PETA-approved, with its
canine threat to "stomp your head in the ground," but, to a 5-year-old
riding in his dad's pick-up truck, listening to an 8-track, it was high
comedy. My other favorite on the album was "Flushed From The Bathroom Of
Your Heart."
I also remember cherishing an album by the New Christy Minstrels called
"Land of the Giants." Research has proven that the group's line-up at the
time ('64) included both Barry McGuire and Gene Clark, but all I knew at the
time was that the song "Joe Magarac" was pretty cool.
