Yeah! And it's available on EMusic, as well. Just picked up some Turtles from eMusic. They've really got it going on there.

My friends Cabinessence will soon have their CD out. Cheer them. They just keep getting better and better. Buy their music: http://cabinessencemusic.com/ and http://www.myspace.com/cabinessence. Looks like they are on the lookout for reviewers, too - and I know a few folks here do that sorta thing. I believe they will be planning at trip to SF and LA areas very soon. I hope some of you will go see them.

Also, another band I touted previously now have a proper release. The Village Green have an EP out which you can check out at: http://villagegreenmusic.com and http://www.myspace.com/villagegreen.

Other things that have me curious: Lots of Kirsty MacColl reissue and comp activity this year that never, ever got mentioned here. "Kite", "Electric Landlady" and "Titanic Days" were all reissued with a helping of bonus tracks on each. And Virgin put out a really terrific 3 CD retrospective with lots of hard to find, never before issued (or never on CD) tracks. And it's a great starting place for the uninitiated, but has so much for longtime fans too. Did I already mention this here? Sorry to waste your bandwidth, if so.

The new Girl Group box set on Rhino is a revelation. Though I've run across a handful of these tracks in the past, it comes to me mostly as found sounds. My understanding is that licensing of Spector related material is prohibitive and so they end up taking a different tack here (well I don't know, maybe this was always the plan). The most obvious and previously anthologized tracks are not here (though those groups and artist still do often appear). By digging much deeper into the archives of lost and forgotten girl group sounds they've made a compelling, undeniable case for the relevance of this era to serious lovers of pop music. I don't think I've enjoyed a box set this much in years.

And on a related note I wouldn't call myself disappointed by the Children of Nuggets box, because it's excellent as well. But I can't help listening to artists on the set who've been previously anthologized in Rhino boxes and wondering if the particular tracks chosen were influenced by those previous anthologies. That might seem like an obtuse criticism, but it seemed like some choices for the Rain Parade, Spongetones, The Plimsouls and others might have been affected by previous dips into the same pond. Maybe that's as it should be, but I guess part of the wonder of the original Nuggets album is the sense of possibility it engendered by drawing from where Lenny Kaye wanted to take it and that alone. Still, great to see one of my all time favorites "The Trains" by The Nashville Ramblers appear again. They can play that one at my funeral. What a song. Strange funeral song, tho. Anyway, it's a very minor criticism - I think it's an amazing set.

Ok, on deck for the morning - new Terry Anderson and The Magic Numbers.
