Charity and I live about three blocks from the Paradise, and when we
have people staying in a hotel, we send them to the Days Inn at the
corner of Soldiers Field Road and Western Ave over in Brighton.
(There's another Days Inn, also on Soldiers Field Road in Brighton,
but it's a little further out and not as nice a hotel, but it *is*
right next to the Rock and Roll IHOP, if you want crap breakfasts at
two in the morning.) Expect to pay about $80 a night, less if you're
a AAA member.

It's less than two miles from the Paradise, and it has parking.

You'd have to rely on buses and transfers if you stay at the Days Inn,
but Allston and Brighton are considerably less difficult to drive in
than most of the Boston/Cambridge area, and if you know where to look,
there's parking in the immediate neighborhood around the Paradise:
there are metered spaces on Gardner and Ashford, which are the streets
parallel to Comm Ave behind the Paradise, and also on Malvern, Alcorn
and Babcock, which are the nearby cross-streets. (Resist the
temptation to park in the lot behind the Shaws: if you're in there
longer than two hours, it's a $50 fine.)

It's a pretty straight shot from the Days Inn to the Paradise as well,
as long as you know what you're doing: From Western Ave, turn south
onto Everett Street, which will take you over the Pike, then turn left
at the second traffic light, which is Brighton Ave. (Can't miss it,
it's where Everett Street ends.) Drive straight through Union Square,
and through the lights at Allston Street and Harvard Ave. The next
light is Linden Street. (Budget Rent A Car, Spike's Hot Dogs and a
Hess station.) Turn left onto Linden and then take the next right,
onto Gardner. After the stop sign at Gardner and Malvern (two blocks
away) is where the metered parking spaces start. Find one and then
find Babcock Street and turn right (towards the stoplight). The
Paradise is on this side of Comm Ave, between Babcock and St. Paul.

Charity points out that the Holiday Inn in Brookline, at the corner of
Beacon Street and St. Paul, is about a 15-to-20-minute walk from the
Paradise, but that it's a fair bit spendier than the Days Inn. I
mention it in the interest of completeness, though I recognize that
most people who don't live in densely populated urban areas don't
always think of a 15-to-20-minute walk as being "right nearby."

Decent record stores in the neighborhood: In Your Ear, about a
half-block down from the Paradise; Regeneration (almost entirely a
punk store, but with some quality old-school stuff, a good chunk of it
donated from my own collection) on Harvard between Brighton Ave and
Comm Ave; Nuggets, on Comm Ave between Kenmore Square and Mass Ave;
and Flipside, on Beacon Street just past Coolidge Corner next to
Anna's Taqueria. And of course, no visit to Boston is complete
without quality time in a Newbury Comics, by some distance the best
local record store chain (locations on Newbury Street, The Garage in
Harvard Square, Government Center, and in the burbs).

Best eats near the Paradise: Quan's Kitchen, on the inbound side of
Comm Ave just on the other side of Babcock Street. It's just a little
hole in the wall Chinese place, but it's the BEST little hole in the
wall Chinese place in Boston. I'm particularly partial to the beef
with bean curd on egg fried rice.
