More important, it's an all-new version with Ian backed by the frickin'
DAIRY KINGS.

Hey Gregory,

First off, I don't think you're being nitpicky. You make very valid points
about the inclusion of Ian Gomm's version of "Cruel To Be Kind" on the Nick
trib. I go into detail about how this came to be in the liner notes,
however, I'll give everyone a quick rundown here.

You are correct that Ian released a version of "Cruel To Be Kind" on his
Crazy For You album. When Ian submitted it for this Nick Lowe tribute, he
explained it was a Japanese only release so I figured very few people would
have heard it. However, when I received the song and gave it a listen, I
was concerned that the production made it sound dated alongside all the
newly recorded tribute tracks. Ian agreed, so my band and I re-recorded the
song from the ground up using his arrangement. Ian added an amazing new
vocal and the track was complete. So what you have is an all new Ian Gomm
version of "Cruel To Be Kind!"

I know it may seem a bit weird that he's on a tribute to Nick Lowe doing a
song that he co-wrote. But hey, it's a great version and these tributes are
supposed to be fun right? I think when you start adding rules and limiting
what you can and can't do, you begin to lose sight of the end goal - making
a great record. This is the same reason I allowed a few covers (songs that
Nick didn't write) on the tribute. After listening, I hope you'll agree I
made the right decisions by bending the rules :-)

Take care all,

Walter

Not to rain on the parade of this upcoming Not Lame trib to Nick Lowe,
since both the material and the people recording it are splendid enough to
have me excited at the thought of hearing it. But am I the only one puzzled
by the inclusion of Ian Gomm's version of "Cruel To Be Kind"?
