It may have been a matter of bands who appreciated the Carpenters' work
rather than bands INFLUENCED by them. "If I Were A Carpenter" featured
bands with no real A.M. radio pop pedigree who were "interpreting" these
songs rather than channelling them. Let's face it.....Babes In Toyland doing
"Calling Occupants" was neither a homage to The Carpenters or the guys that
wrote the song -- Klaatu. It was a crusty spin on a well-worn space trip.
If you went to the Carpenters' contemporaries and asked THEM for songs you'd
get folks like Elton John or Dionne Warwick doing straight-up homages
because there'd be honest-to-goodness reverence for the material.
